The Royal Scientific Society (RSS) was established in 1970 as a non-profit national research and development institution. RSS enjoys financial and administrative independence. It is the largest applied research institution and technical service provider at the national level, boasting more than 600 members of staff working different sectors and departments.
RSS is part of El-Hassan Science City in addition to The Higher Council for Science and Technology (HCST), Princess Sumaya University for Technology (PSUT) and Queen Rania Center for Entrepreneurship (QRCE).
RSS comprises the following sectors:

- Quality Sector
- Testing Sector
- Outreach Sector
The Royal Scientific Society developed its activities concentrating on four major areas;

2. Technical services and consultations
3. Standards and specifications
4. Human resources development
RSS provides outstanding level of consultations and services in environmental protection and management through Water and Environmental Consultations and Projects Division. It has been deeply involved in the assessment of water quality, air quality, environmental auditing and environmental impact assessment in addition to monitoring of major environmental elements. RSS is equipped with specialized laboratories for water quality analysis and air quality measurements and has qualified staff to ensure high level of professional performance in major environmental areas.
